Netgear Orbi setup tips with existing router

Step 1 : Unplug Everything and Reconnect

Unplug your modem and, if it has a backup battery, take it out and replace it with a new one. Reconnect the modem to the computer. Using the Ethernet wire that came with your Orbi router, connect your modem to the yellow Internet port on the router. Ensure that your Orbi router is connected to a power source. If the Power LED on the back of the Orbi router does not illuminate, click the Power On/Off button on the router’s front panel to activate it.

Step 2 : Wait till power up

Wait for the Orbi router’s ring LED to become solid white, then pulse white, before proceeding. The Orbi satellite should be placed in the centre of your home for the finest WiFi coverage possible. Connect the Orbi satellite to a power source to enable it to function. If the Power LED on the rear of the Orbi satellite does not illuminate, push the Power On/Off button on the satellite’s remote control.

Continue to wait for the Orbi satellite’s ring LED to light solid white, then pulse white, and finally pulse magenta before proceeding. While the satellite tries to sync with the Orbi router, the ring LED on the Orbi satellite may pulse magenta for up to one minute. As soon as the Orbi satellite’s ring LED starts pulsing magenta, it changes colour and illuminates one of the following colours for 10 seconds before turning off:

Solid blue. Excellent communication exists between the Orbi router and the Orbi satellite.

Solid magenta. The Orbi satellite is unable to establish a connection with the Orbi router. Move the Orbi satellite closer to the Orbi router to improve performance.

Solid amber. The connection between the Orbi router and the Orbi satellite is of reasonable quality. Moving the Orbi satellite closer to the Orbi router is an option to consider.

Note:If the Orbi satellite’s ring LED continues to pulse magenta after about one minute, and you have previously relocated the Orbi satellite closer to the Orbi router, hit the Sync button on both the Orbi router and the Orbi satellite.

Step 3 : Connect with your devices

  • Networking your computer, tablet, or mobile device to the Orbi router or satellite through an Ethernet cable or WiFi connection is recommended.
  • Please keep in mind that in order to connect through WiFi, you must first locate the preset WiFi network name (SSID) and password on the label on the Orbi router or satellite and then connect to that network from a computer or mobile device that is equipped with WiFi.
  • Install the Orbi app or go to http://orbilogin.com to get started with setting up your Orbi WiFi network. After the configuration is complete, the ring LED on the Orbi router is turned off.
  • The brightness % of the satellite’s LED lights may be adjusted once the lighting has been turned on.
